To say Cumbria enjoys a varied climate would perhaps be an understatement. For much of the year westerly winds dominate the weather pattern bringing in moist but relatively mild air. This frequently combines with the mountainous nature of the region to produce heavy, but often fairly short, periods of rain.

Prolonged, settled spells of weather are less common than in other regions but they do occur, most typically in late spring or early autumn. Micro climates are a feature of Cumbria with some areas notably drier than others and on any given day significant variations occur. For example Eden Valley weather can be very much different to that of the central Lake District and a weather 'split' often takes place between the north and south of the county.

All of this has a major impact on the fishing and a good browse through the forecasts can be a great help in making an informed choice about where to go - or even whether to go!
