At almost 300 acres Esthwaite is the largest stocked trout water in Cumbria offering both boat and bank angling throughout the year. This is a very scenic fishery, located near Hawkshead and currently stocked with brown trout Esthwaite also holds large pike which can be fished for over the winter months.
For the boat angler there is excellent fishing, particularly early and late in the season, with good long drifts over varied water. Buzzers in the spring and fry feeders in the autumn offer the cream of the season’s sport. Like most large waters there are hotspots and if you are new to the water its well worth a chat with the fishery staff before setting out. At the height of summer fish tend to hold deep during the day and sinking lines tactics can be the best way to find them. Otherwise a floater will nearly always produce fish with static nymph or buzzer frequently the method.
Bank anglers have access to the shoreline from the fishery office down to the outlet and again from the shore opposite the boats. Further access is possible at the northern end of the lake although large sections of bank are private or inaccessible.
There is a Wheely Boat with engine for wheelchair anglers.
The northern half of the lake is fly only but any method (spinning, worm, bait) is permitted in the south basin.
The fishery has a well stocked tackle shop and refreshments are available on site. Instruction, guiding and tackle hire are also available.
